Brief Description: Black and white photograph of pupil of a pupil at the Green Girl School, 1903-1907
Subject Date: 1903 - 1907
Publisher: Green Girl School

Full Description: This photograph shows Miss Elsie Nellie Watson, who was a pupil at the school between 1903 and 1907. This photograph was taken of her when she was sixteen. For most of the nineteenth century the school was based in a handsome building in Broad Street. It was sited in Russell Street from 1903 to 1921. The Green School - so named from the colour of the girl's dresses - was founded in 1782. It was a boarding school that gave its working-class pupils a basic education, but was mainly dedicated to producing young women who were trained in various household skills and would make good domestic servants. Domestic service was the most common form of employment for working class girls in Reading during the nineteenth century. As the century wore on more found work in factories such as Huntley & Palmers. During the twentieth century office work became another option. Such social changes brought about the school's closure a few years after this photograph was taken, in the 1920s.
