Brief Description: Coloured aquatint of a view of the Corn Market, Simeon Monument and St Laurence's Church, Reading, by W H Timms, published 1823
Subject Date: 1823
Creator: W.H. Timms

Full Description: W.H.Timms produced a series of prints showing scenes in and around Reading which were first published in 1823. This one shows a view of the Market Place crowded with farmers and sacks of corn. Before the industrialization brought about by the coming of the railway in 1840 Reading's main claim to significance was as the market town for eastern Berkshire. The scene shown here is busy and people seem prosperous. However, during the agricultural riots of 1830s there was a considerable amount of violence in villages around Reading. Conditions for most rural labourers were poor and this was reflected in the hundreds of men and women that were arrested and brought into Reading for trial. Many were transported and one man, from Kintbury, was hung. Timm's, however, is keen to show the town as a lively and economically vibrant place.
