Subject Date: 1858
Creator: Ellis (Mrs)
Publisher: Richard Bentley
Full Description: This book about the Quakers, or members of the Society of Friends, originally came from the factory library. In 1854 some workers asked if a reading room and library could be provided. George Palmer immediately created one because he believed in what he called 'feeding the mind'. There is a borrowers notice inside the front cover; '"This Book must not, under any circumstances be kept longer than one month. Any one keeping it longer will, without further notice, be liable to have the cost deducted from his (or her) wages. If the Book is damaged, a proportionate fine will be enforced. We hope those who take out Books will see that every care is taken of them, and that both the outside and inside are kept as clean as possible." Huntley & Palmers.'
