Brief Description: The River Kennet at Newtown by Christopher Hall
Subject Date: 1975
Creator: Christopher Hall

Full Description: In 1876 the housing at the Mount, Reading was built by Huntley & Palmers for their growing army of clerical and management staff. The properties were graded in accordance with the rank of the occupants. The mid-terraced properties were occupied by clerks, the end-terraces by foremen and the larger properties by under-managers and managers. However the vast majority of factory employees lived in rented terraced housing in areas like Newtown, across the River Kennet from the factory.
