Coley Steps, around 1911
Brief Description: A photograph of Coley Steps probably featuring residents about 1911.
Subject Date: 1911 (about)

Full Description: During the nineteenth century this area of cheap housing was perhaps the most impoverished area of Reading. This photograph shows the well-known Coley Steps, which ran down the slope towards the Kennet. Much of the poorest housing was demolished in the 1930s and 1950s. During the 1970s the Inner Distribution Road flattened more of the area.
