Brief Description: Half of the general office. This occupied the whole of the top floor of the front building on King's Road which opened in 1937
Subject Date: 1937 - 1950
Creator: Walton Adams

Full Description: Until 1904 the office staff were all men. In 1904 three ladies were employed as typists although they were shut securely away in a separate office. When the First World War broke out more and more women were brought into the offices as the men went away to fight. In 1934 a committee of directors and managers was set up to recommend an improved office layout. This committee found that the only way to improve working conditions and efficiency was a new building. Management consultants Urwick Orr and Partners advised on a new management structure and in 1935 the old Victorian office was demolished and work started on a well-lighted steel and concrete office building.
