Brief Description: Alfred Palmer's Huntley & Palmers fire brigade good conduct and long service medal
Subject Date: 1909
Publisher: Huntley & Palmers

Full Description: In October 1909 the Directors decided to present medals to the members of their volunteer Fire Brigade which had been in existence for 38 years since 1871. A silver medal was given for 20 or more years of service, a ribbon with two stripes for 15 years service and a ribbon with one stripe for more than 10 years service. Among the recipients was Alfred Palmer, the brigade's first president. This medal and two stripes were presented to Alfred Palmer. Alfred Palmer was in charge of the manufacturing department, which made nearly all the biscuit machinery and some of the boilers. Between 1882 and 1908 he installed three very large generating machines which he named after his wife, daughter and granddaughter - Alice, Phyllis and Betty. Phyllis was put out of service in 1927 but Betty and Alice continued until 1956 when they were scrapped.Had it not been for Alfred Palmers mechanical inventiveness, the firm would have been quite unable to turn out so many of the different kinds of biscuit of such varying shapes and textures.
