Brief Description: Exterior of shop in Lyon with display of Huntley & Palmers biscuits
Subject Date: 1928

Full Description: Huntley & Palmers trade with France had declined after the First World War because of the unfavourable exchange rates and high import tariffs. To get around this issue in 1924 Huntley & Palmers opened a factory in France at La Courneuve, Paris. Unfortunately the factory was never truly profitable - in part a result of the Second World War and the occupation of France - and in 1951 it was shut down. This was the first and last time that Huntley & Palmers tried manufacturing abroad.
