Brief Description: Display of Huntley & Palmers tins at the Universal Exhibition of Vienna, 1873
Subject Date: 1873

Full Description: Huntley & Palmers' case was designed by leading industrial designer Owen Jones and was situated in the centre of British agricultural exhibits gallery. George Palmer's sons George William and Alfred supervised its construction. It earned the company a bronze medal 'for progress in new inventions and the introduction of new materials and contrivances'. Vienna's Prater Park was chosen as the exposition site. It was the first international exposition to use multiple buildings. It had become difficult to fit everything into just one structure and the Austrian government decided to construct separate buildings to display different aspects of human activity. The most prominent building was the Palace of Industry, which expanded on either side to form a horizontal strip about 2953 feet long running from east to west, and contained a series of twenty-eight galleries that displayed an international array of industrial products.
