Brief Description: View of the Biscuit Factory and new King's Road Offices from the spire of St John's church
Subject Date: 1937

Full Description: Huntley & Palmers new offices were just being completed when this photograph was taken in early 1937. This building replaced the cramped and dingy Victorian offices that fronted the King's Road. The new buildings cost £55,000 and were constructed of steel and reinforced concrete with large windows. In this photograph you can also see the work going on to widen the King's Road and create a garden beside the canal for factory workers. Beyond the offices are the jumble of factory buildings and chimneys with the River Thames and Caversham in the distance. In the foreground there are Victorian workers terraced houses that were mostly demolished during later twentieth century road and redevelopment schemes.
