Brief Description: Huntley & Palmers advertising booklet for the Chinese market
Subject Date: Early twentieth century
Publisher: Huntley & Palmers
Full Description: Huntley & Palmers' Superior Reading biscuits are introduced to a young Chinese consumer by his elders in this advertising image. The Far East market was very important to the company's income and profits in the 1900s. From the 1850s Huntley & Palmers had trading contacts in China and the Far East. In 1874 the company boasted that 'seldom a ship sails from England that does not bear within his ribs a Reading Biscuit'. By then the company held a royal appointment to supply the Japanese court. In 1906 the Far East including China accounted for 35% of the company's overseas trade, almost as much as the European market.
