Brief Description: Typists working in Air Raid Shelter at the Biscuit Factory
Subject Date: Around 1940
Full Description: Huntley & Palmers started preparations for war in April 1939 by building air raid shelters and fitting dimmer lights for blackouts. Eric Palmer set up a 'Cake and Biscuit Manufacturers Wartime Alliance' in January 1939 to ensure that adequate biscuit supplies would be available for all those evacuated on the outbreak of war. The company supplied Fancy Lunch biscuits to mothers and children that were evacuated from London and other large cities. The typist second from right is Ada Margaret Bennett (nee Temple). She met her husband Lance Bennett at the Biscuit Factory, he worked in the Accounts Department. She started work at the factory in the 1920s and later became secretary to Mr Meatyard, the Office Manager. During the War she was involved with air raid warden duties.
